Here are some general guidelines: An R wire can go into a Nest Learning Thermostats Rc or Rh connector. The Nest Thermostat E only has an R connector, which is typically where an R wire would go. These are not jumper wires, and you can insert the Rc wire into the Rc connector and the Rh wire into the Rh connector.
Does R go into RC or RH?
In a thermostat, the R wire is responsible for powering the entire HVAC system (through a transformer). If you have both an Rh (Red-heat for powering the heating) and an Rc (Red-cool for powering the cooling), then the R wire can be connected to either Rh or Rc.
Is Rh the same as R on thermostat?
Understanding what RC stands for means, you can probably take an educated guess as to the meaning of RH. The R still indicates its a hot wire and terminal connection, and the H simply means heating. The RH wire connects to the RH terminal and controls the heating part of the thermostat.
What is R RC RH?
Rh stands for Red-Heat and Rc stands for Red-Cool. If you only have a single red wire the jumper between Rh and Rc are required for some heating and cooling hybrid systems depending on your thermostat. Yellow/Y is the AC compressor. White/W is the Heating element. Green/G runs the fan.
Do I need a jumper from R to RC?
If you have a wire in the R terminal, and another wire (not a jumper) in the RC terminal, you will not need to connect the R and RC terminals. See our Basic Wiring article for more info here.
Is RC same as C wire?
Typically, the wires that give the power supply (usually termed as the hot wires) are marked Rc (for cooling) and Rh (for heating). They give a 24-volt power supply from the HVAC systems control panel. If your system has a common wire, it will be marked C at most times.
What color is C wire?
blue wire The blue wire on the thermostat is the Common or “C” wire.
What does W mean on a thermostat?
W wire – heat. R wire – heat power. W wire – heat. G wire – fan.
What color is RC wire on thermostat?
Red Red or “Rc” Wires Red wires, specifically Rc wires, are responsible for 24-hour volt AC power from your transformer. Rc wires are only for air conditioning systems or dual transformer systems. Dual transformer systems refer to a setup with a cooling and heating transformer.
Why does my thermostat have a jumper from R to RC?
Some thermostats have a jumper switch, some have a metal staple, others may have a plug, and the jumper may also just be a wire connecting the two terminals. If you have two wires, R or RH will go into the R terminal, and RC will go into the RC terminal. This wire will go to the G terminal on your new thermostat.
Is RC the common wire?
Typically, the wires that give the power supply (usually termed as the hot wires) are marked Rc (for cooling) and Rh (for heating). If your system has a common wire, it will be marked C at most times.
Where does R and RC wire go on nest?
Note: If you have an R, Rc or Rh wire, you can put it into the R connector on the Nest Thermostat. If you have a W2, Y2 or O/B wire, you can put it into the *O/B connector, if needed.
Is RC and C wire the same?
Typically, the wires that give the power supply (usually termed as the hot wires) are marked Rc (for cooling) and Rh (for heating). They give a 24-volt power supply from the HVAC systems control panel. If your system has a common wire, it will be marked C at most times.
How do I know if I have C wire?
It is easy to see if you already have a c-wire connected to your system. Simply remove your current thermostat face from its baseplate and look for the terminal labeled with the letter “c.” If this terminal has a wire attached to it, you have an active “c-wire.”
How many wires should my thermostat have?
The most basic thermostat has 2 wires; usually a red and a white wire. Two wire thermostat wiring is used for furnaces only and usually doesnt need a “C” or “Common” wire. Thats why we only need two wires: Red wire for power (24h).
Does Nest need RC and RH?
Nest thermostat connectors are built so that only one wire can be inserted into each connector. Instead of using jumper wires, Nest Learning Thermostats use an internal jumper between the Rh and Rc connectors. A Nest Learning Thermostat will automatically use this internal jumper if your system needs it.
Can I use RC wire as C wire?
Can I use one of RC wire as C wire to power on my Ecobee. Thanks. Yes. You dont need to connect both Rc and Rh at the Ecobee as they are internally jumpered by the thermostat.
Does my thermostat need a jumper?
If your HVAC system has both heating and cooling functions, youll need to connect both the Rc and Rh terminals with a red wire. Because many thermostats come with a pre-installed thermostat jumper wire that connects these terminals, you only need one red wire, which could be the thermostat Rc wire or the Rh wire.
