Often referred to as “Camel City” after the world-famous cigarette brand created by R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company, Winston-Salem is full of examples of tobaccos success, including the 22-story Reynolds building downtown that was a prototype for New York Citys Empire State Building.

Why is Winston-Salem called that?

It was formed in 1913 from the amalgamation of the towns of Winston (established 1849) and Salem (established 1766). Winston was named for Colonel Joseph Winston, who fought at both Kings Mountain and Guilford Courthouse during the Revolutionary War, and was later a state Senator and US House member.
