Every tire has a birth date—the day it was manufactured—and an expiration date that is six years from that manufacture date. Most automobile manufacturers warn drivers to replace vehicle tires after six years. To wait any longer than that is a gamble with tire integrity and is risky for drivers.
How do I know when my tires expire?
Its typically a 10- or 11-character DOT (Department of Transportation) code, near the DOT stamp, embossed on the sidewall of the tire. Check the last four digits. The last two refer to the year the tire was manufactured, the first two (of the four) represent the week number.
Can tyres go out of date?

Are 10 year old Tyres safe?
Tyres that are aged 10 years and older will become a failure item at annual test. If these tyres do not display a date code, they will also fail. As part of the annual test, our Vehicle Standards Assessors (VSAs) will check that each tyre displays a date of manufacture or re-treading.
What make your tyres illegal?
The tread depth of your tyres must not fall below the legal minimum measurements. The legal limit for car tyre tread depth is 1.6mm - so you should consider changing your tyres at around 3mm. However, if your tyres do fall below 1.6mm, these are then classed as illegal tyres.
