Do alligators live in the Waccamaw River?
Alligators do live in the river but they are rarely seen on the upper part of the Waccamaw River where our Outpost and River Island is located. Alligators, like most wildlife generally dont bother you if you dont bother them.
Why is Waccamaw River Black?
Part of the Winyah Bay watershed, the 140-mile Waccamaw River is one of the most beautiful blackwater rivers in the country. Tannins from decaying leaves give the river its ebony color. It flows through cypress swamps, historic rice fields and tidal marshes that are home to many rare species of plants and animals.

We do not discourage nor encourage you from swimming in the river but if you choose to swim in the river it will be at your own risk with no lifeguard or supervision. We do require all participants to wear foot protection and one of our provided life jackets during all water activities.
