What is a dating scan called?
A dating ultrasound or dating scan is a scan done early in pregnancy (before 12 weeks). It is usually done to check how many weeks pregnant you are and therefore to calculate the estimated due date, but it can be done for other reasons. •
When is the viability scan?
This ultrasound examination is usually done vaginally around the eighth week of pregnancy. It may be done in your regular doctors office or you may be referred to prenatal ultrasound for a more detailed scan.
Do I need a full bladder for viability scan?
An empty bladder is needed. If you want to avoid an internal scan then come after 8 weeks when we should be able to see the baby using the abdominal probe, providing your bladder is very full. Please note that the purpose of our early scans is to diagnose viability.
